Sunnah

What is Sunnah?

  •  Sunnah is a term used to refer to the practices and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
  •  It is the second source of Islamic knowledge for us, the first being the Quran
  •  While the Quran gives us knowledge on what/how to follow Islam, the Prophet ﷺ is a role model for how to perform the practices (like prayer/salat) correctly & properly
Why is Sunnah Important?
  •  Sunnah is a major source of Islamic law and is very important in our daily lives since it tells us how to live our lives according to Islam
  •  It is the way the Prophet ﷺ acted, prayed, slept, etc. (his way of life)
  •  Therefore, we should try and mimic his lifestyle as much as possible to live happily and blessed :)
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's Sunnah:

  • Here are some examples of Sunnah:
    • Sadqah (voluntary charity)
    • Trimming of the nails
    • Good table manners
    • Soft talking in a conversation
    • Voluntary prayers and fasting
    • Smiling sincerely
    • Putting out the lights before sleeping
    • Closing the bathroom doors and keeping it cleaned
Sunnah and Its Role in Islam:
  • Sunnah explains and clarifies the Holy Quran in many ways
  • It explains how to perform the acts of worship and carry out the laws that are mentioned in the Holy Quran (as performed by the Prophet ﷺ)
  • Sunnah prayers are an optional prayer that can be performed before the obligatory fard salah
  • Allah (SWT) commands us to pray without mentioning the times that the prayers had to be performed or the manner of performing them
Sunnah in the Light of Quran:
  • In the Quran Allah (SWT) tells believers to be affectionate toward each other, speak good words, and behave modestly
  • Commanding the right, forbidding the wrong, and communicating the moral values of Islam to all of humanity are set out as required duties
  • We learn about how to actually perform all these commands in our lives by means of the practices of the Prophet ﷺ
Dangers of Abandoning Sunnah:
  • "The loss of the religion starts with the abandonment of the Sunnah. Just as a rope breaks fiber by fiber, so does religion vanish with one by one abandoning the Sunnah" (al-Darimi - Muslim Scholar)
  • Some people believe that they can interpret the Quran themselves without any clarification by the Prophet ﷺ, however this means they abandon following Sunnah (since Sunnah is the proper explanation of the Quran)
  • So, these people who have abandoned the Sunnah ignore the Quran’s commandments
  • Islam can only be practiced together with Sunnah and Muslims can apply the Quran into real life with only its help
Quranic Verse that Addresses the Importance of Sunnah:
  • “Indeed, We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner. That you [people] may believe in Allah and His Messenger and honor him and respect the Prophet and exalt Allah morning and afternoon. Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself. And he who fulfills that which he has promised Allah - He will give him a great reward.”
  • The Quranic verse says “those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah”
  • This means that by following the way of the Prophet ﷺ and giving him honor and respect, you get closer to Allah (SWT), and it is evidence of being a true believer
Examples of Ayah in the Quran that Relate to Sunnah:
  • “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.”                    - Quran 33:21
  • “Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.” - Quran 3:164

Role of Women in Islam

Importance of a Muslim Girl: When a Muslim girl is born, she becomes a reason for her parents to enter paradise When a Muslim girl becomes a wife, she completes half of her husband’s Deen When a Muslim girl becomes a mother, paradise is beneath her feet In Islam, we always talk about Prophets or companions who dedicated their entire lives to Islam and spreading Allah’s message. But what about their wives and daughters? We should also look into women’s lives of that time period. Women gave the same amount of contribution to Islam as Men did. These women are role models for young girls. They were the most pious and pure women. Allah loved them and rewarded them with Jannah (Heaven) The Greatest Muslim Women: Hazrat Khadija (RA) - Wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  Hazrat Fatimah (RA) - Daughter of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ + Khadija (RA)  Hazrat Aisha (RA) - Wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who recorded the most amount of Hadith we read today!
