Role of Prophets and Revelations

What is a Prophet?

  •  Prophets are human beings chosen by Allah to carry out His message and Revelation
  •  Most prophetic narrations state that Allah has sent 124,000 prophets
  •  However there are only 25 mentioned in the Quran
  •  The most notable of the messengers are five: Noah (Nuh), Abraham (Ibrahim), Moses (Musa), Jesus (Isa) and Muhammad ﷺ

Characteristics of Prophets:
  •  Sidq (Loyalty): Prophets tell the truth about the message they receive from Allah. They can never tell lies!
  • Amanah (Trust): Prophets are reliable and trustworthy people when it comes to fulfilling duties Allah gave them They can never break their trust between a person or Allah
  • Tabligh (Conveying): Prophets convey orders that are revealed to them by Allah to their nations exactly. They never add or miss anything. They can never hide news from their people
  • Fatanah (Intelligence): Prophets had superior minds and intelligence. A strong memory, superior logic and ability of persuasion
  • Ismah (Innocence): Prophets are free from all kinds of sin, whether it is a secret, faults, bad deeds and acts which are not suitable for prophets
  • Mu’jiza (Miracle): Allah has given every prophet the quality to produce something extraordinary things or events in order to disprove the disbelievers and fascinate people so that they may believe in Allah’s truth. There are many supernatural events that have taken place such as the splitting of the Red Sea
Why Were Prophets Sent? What is Their Purpose in the World?
  • To Illuminate Humanity’s Way
    • Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ and all His previous prophets to illuminate our way to the right path!
    • He also sent them so people can be guided to the truth so that they may be purified of sin
    • Those people who were enlightened by Allah’s messengers found the way to divine presence and they attained highest rank in humanity
  • To Guide People to the Serves of Allah
    • We must remember that we are not only created to eat and drink, these are only the natural needs of our lives. Our main purpose in to recognize and serve Allah
    • Allah has sent prophets to guide us to His service: We never sent a messenger before you except that we revealed to him: "There is no God but I, so worship me." {21:25}
    • Every prophets mission was the same however there’s two differences between Prophets. Every man was a prophet which Allah sent however only a few are Messengers!
  • To Teach People Allah's Law
    • Prophets were also sent to reveal divine commandments
    • For example, the Messenger was sent to enlighten humanity about all dimensions of human life such as, business, relationships, character, etc.
  • To Be Examples
    • Allah sent Prophets to serve as examples that must be followed consciously
    • They were perfect examples of Muslims and did not have any flaws, therefore they are examples for us to follow. So that we may develop their righteous characteristics
  • To Establish Balance
    • Prophets came to establish balance between material and spiritual life, reason and soul, this world and the next
    • For example, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established balance into his companion’s hearts so that their spiritual and material life are balanced
    • Many companions of the prophet were extremely rich, but they learned to live a balanced life even though they had every chance to live a luxurious life
  • To be God's Witness
    • Prophets also were sent so that people cannot plead ignorance in the Hereafter!
Misconceptions:
  • Muslims believe that each Prophet brought the same religion and fulfilled what Allah has commanded to do
  • All Prophets are and should be treated with respect and honor – it is forbidden to disbelieve in them or to make fun of them or criticize them
Difference Between A Messenger and A Prophet:
  • Prophets are pious people which are identified by Allah and appointed as Prophets. However not every prophet was given a specific role/goal
  • Messengers on the other hand, were given specific role/goals i.e. Hud, Saleh, Jonah , Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad ﷺ
  • Many Prophets became martyrs, but Messengers were protected by Allah, they could not be killed
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariya' (army-unit) setting out in Allah's Cause. By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to be martyred in Allah's Cause and then get resurrected and then get martyred, and then get resurrected again and then get martyred and then get resurrected again and then get martyred.
Book: Sahih Bukhari: Hadith #2797

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men who dislike to be left behind and for whom I do not have means of conveyance, I would not stay away (from any Holy Battle). I would love to be martyred in Allah's Cause and come to life and then get, martyred and then come to life and then get martyred and then get resurrected and then get martyred.
Book: Sahih Bukhari: Hadith #7226

But what about their wives and daughters? We should also look into women’s lives of that time period. Women gave the same amount of contribution to Islam as Men did. Hazrat Esa (AS): Prophet Esa (AS) was a very special Prophet and Messenger who was given miracles by Allah He was given the miracle to speak when he was only a baby, giving life to the dead, healing the blind and ones who were infected with leprosy Purpose of Miracles: Most prophets were given miracles to prove the existence of Allah and to disprove the disbelievers of accusations against their prophets We must remember that miracles were not superpowers of the prophets, they were given by Allah to them and were only performed by His will Quranic Verses: “A man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through him in your midst.” (Quran 2:22) “I bring to life the dead, by the permission of God.” (Quran 3:49) “I create for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird with God’s permission.” (Quran 3:49) Why these miracles?
